Exact calendar age
Elapsed-time equivalents
Use the Age on a Specific Date Calculator above to find your exact age on any past, present, or future date. Enter your date of birth and select the date you want to check to see your age in completed years, months, and days.
This is useful when you want to know how old you were on an earlier date, how old you will be on a future date, or your exact age as of a particular reference or cutoff date.
Calculate Your Age on Any Past or Future Date
A standard age calculator usually calculates your age as of today. An age on a specific date calculator works differently because you choose the date on which your age should be measured.
Your date of birth is the starting point, while the selected target date is the reference point. The calculator compares those two calendar dates to determine your completed age.
If the target date is in the past, the result shows how old you were. If the date is in the future, it shows how old you will be. If you choose today, it gives your current age.
How to Use the Age on a Specific Date Calculator
- Enter your date of birth.
- Choose the date on which you want your age calculated.
- Select Calculate Age.
- Review your exact age in completed years, months, and days.
The calculator may also show supporting information such as completed months, full weeks, total days, and the day of the week for the selected target date.
Past Date vs Future Date
| Target Date | What the Result Means |
|---|---|
| Before today | How old you were on that date |
| Today | Your age on today’s date |
| After today | How old you will be on that date |
For example, you can use the same calculator to answer both “How old was I on June 10, 2018?” and “How old will I be on June 10, 2030?” The calculation method stays the same. Only the target date changes.
How Age on a Specific Date Is Calculated
Your exact age on a specific date is calculated using completed calendar years, completed calendar months, and any remaining days between your date of birth and the target date.
The calculation uses actual calendar dates rather than assuming that every year contains 365 days or that every month contains the same number of days.
Completed Years
The calculation first determines the number of full years completed by the target date.
Simply subtracting the birth year from the target year is not always enough. If your birthday has not yet occurred in the target year, another full year has not been completed.
Completed Months
After completed years are counted, the calculator determines how many additional full calendar months have passed.
Calendar month lengths vary. Depending on the month and year, a month may contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, so exact age calculations need to use the real calendar rather than a fixed number of days per month.
Remaining Days
After completed years and months are determined, any remaining whole days make up the final part of the exact age.
A result might therefore be shown as 19 years, 11 months, and 24 days.
This exact calendar age is different from elapsed-time totals. For example, a total number of days describes the whole interval using one unit, while years, months, and days express the same interval using completed calendar units.

Examples of Age on a Specific Date
Example: Target Date Before Your Birthday
Suppose your date of birth is March 15, 2000, and you want to know your age on March 10, 2020.
Although 2020 minus 2000 equals 20, your 20th birthday had not yet occurred on March 10. Your exact age on that date was:
19 years, 11 months, and 24 days.
This is why subtracting the birth year from the target year alone may give the wrong completed age.
Example: Target Date After Your Birthday
Now use the same date of birth, March 15, 2000, but change the target date to March 20, 2020.
Your 20th birthday had already occurred five days earlier, so your age on March 20 was:
20 years and 5 days.
Whether your birthday has already occurred by the target date determines how many full years have been completed.
Leap Years and February 29 Birthdays
The calculator uses actual calendar dates, so leap years and the changing length of February are taken into account when calculating age.
A February 29 date of birth requires a consistent rule in years that do not contain February 29. For calculations on this website, a person born on February 29 is treated as reaching their annual birthday on February 28 in a non-leap year.
For example, a person born on February 29, 2000 is treated as completing 21 years on February 28, 2021 under this calculation convention.
This convention keeps results consistent across the calculators on this website. Legal, administrative, educational, or other organizations may apply their own rules when determining age for official purposes.
Common Reasons to Calculate Age on a Specific Date
Calculating age on a particular date can be useful whenever your age today is not the information you need.
- Historical events: Find out how old you were when a particular event happened.
- Graduation or school milestones: Calculate your age on a graduation, enrollment, or school-start date.
- Wedding or family events: Determine your age on a wedding date, the birth of a child, or another personal milestone.
- Applications and forms: Calculate your age as of an application, filing, or reference date.
- Age cutoff dates: Find your exact age on an admission, examination, competition, or other cutoff date.
- Future milestones: See how old you will be on a future anniversary, retirement date, or other planned event.
The calculator determines your age on the date you select. It does not determine whether you meet a particular legal, administrative, school, employment, or eligibility requirement. The organization applying the rule decides how its age requirement is interpreted.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “age as of a date” mean?
Your age as of a date is the age you had completed on that particular reference date rather than your age today. The reference date can be in the past, present, or future.
Can the target date be today?
Yes. If you select today’s date as the target date, the calculator will return your current calendar age. You can also use our age calculator when you specifically want to calculate your age today.
Can I calculate someone else’s age on a specific date?
Yes. If you know the person’s date of birth and the date on which you want their age calculated, you can use the same calculator.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation uses real calendar dates, including the extra day in February during leap years.
What happens if I was born on February 29?
For calculations on this website, February 28 is treated as the annual birthday in years that do not contain February 29. This keeps the calculation convention consistent across leap and non-leap years.
What happens if the target date is before my date of birth?
A target date earlier than the date of birth cannot represent your age because you had not yet been born. Choose a target date that is the same as or later than the date of birth.
Can I use this calculator for an age cutoff date?
Yes. Enter the cutoff date as the target date to calculate the person’s exact age on that day. The calculator provides the age only. The organization responsible for the cutoff determines whether that age satisfies its rules.
