How your age is calculated
This calculator works the way a person counting on a calendar would, not by dividing total days lived by 365. It first counts completed years between the date of birth and the calculation date, then completed months, then the remaining days, taking into account that months don't all have the same number of days.
Leap years are handled automatically. If someone was born on February 29, their age is still calculated correctly every year. For the purpose of the next-birthday countdown specifically, the calculator treats February 29 as falling on February 29 during leap years and February 28 during non-leap years, so the countdown always lands on a real calendar date.
The calculation also only considers the calendar date, not the time of day, so the result won't shift by a day depending on time zone or what time you happen to open the page.
Why exact age matters
"About 30 years old" is fine for casual conversation, but plenty of everyday situations need the precise figure:

Hours and minutes are shown as approximate values, because the calculator only asks for a date of birth, not a time of birth. It has no way of knowing exactly what hour someone was born.
Your next birthday, explained
Beyond your current age, the calculator works out the date of your next birthday, which day of the week it falls on, how long you have to wait, and which age you'll be turning. If your calculation date happens to be your birthday, it will simply tell you: Happy Birthday!
As noted above, this countdown uses February 28 in place of February 29 during non-leap years, so a birthday countdown always resolves to a real date on the calendar rather than skipping a year.
Common age-calculation mistakes
Calculating age sounds simple, but a few shortcuts quietly produce the wrong answer:
- Dividing total days by 365. This ignores leap years and drifts further off the longer someone has been alive.
- Assuming every month is the same length. Subtracting month numbers without checking days in each month gives the wrong day count.
- Forgetting whether this year's birthday has happened yet. If it hasn't, the completed-years count needs to be one lower than simply subtracting birth year from the current year.
- Mishandling February 29 birthdays. Treating a leap-year birthday as if it always exists causes errors in non-leap years.
- Letting time zones shift the date. Using a timestamp instead of a calendar date can push the result a day forward or backward depending on where and when the calculation runs.
