An exact calendar-age calculation goes beyond completed years and also determines the remaining full months and days.
Start with the individual date components:
Days = Reference Day − Birth Day
Months = Reference Month − Birth Month
Years = Reference Year − Birth Year
If every result is zero or positive, the calculation is straightforward. If days or months become negative, calendar borrowing is required.
Step 1: Subtract the Days
Subtract the birth day from the reference day.
If the result is positive or zero, keep it. If it is negative, borrow from the previous calendar month.
Step 2: Subtract the Months
Subtract the birth month from the adjusted reference month.

The shortcut:
Current Year − Birth Year
gives only an initial year difference. It does not tell you whether the person has actually completed that many years.

How Borrowing Works in Age Calculations
Borrowing is used when direct subtraction produces a negative day or month value.
Borrowing Days From the Previous Month
Suppose the reference day is 15 and the birth day is 28:
15 − 28 = −13
Because the result is negative, one month is borrowed. The number of days added must come from the actual previous calendar month.
If that previous month contains 31 days, you add 31. If it contains 30 days, you add 30. For February, you must determine whether it contains 28 or 29 days in that year.
After borrowing a month, the reference month is reduced by one before the month subtraction is completed.
Borrowing a Year When Months Are Negative
If the adjusted reference month is still earlier than the birth month, the month difference becomes negative.

- Add 12 to the month value.

A common shortcut is:
Approximate age in years = Total elapsed days ÷ 365
This can provide a rough numerical estimate, but it does not produce an exact calendar age in years, months, and days.

- Calendar years do not all contain 365 days because leap years contain 366.
- Calendar months vary in length, so a decimal fraction of a year cannot be converted directly into a unique number of calendar months and days.
