How Borrowing Works in Manual Age Calculation
When you subtract the day and month parts directly, the target day or month may be smaller than the corresponding value in the birth date. In that situation, you need to borrow from the previous calendar unit.
When the Day Is Smaller
Consider this example:
Date of birth: August 28, 1998
Target date: March 12, 2026
You cannot directly calculate 12 – 28 as the day component because the result would be negative.
Instead, borrow the actual number of days in the calendar month immediately before March 2026. February 2026 has 28 days.
Add those 28 days to the target day:
12 + 28 = 40

40 – 28 = 12 days

Calendar age and total elapsed days describe the same overall interval in different ways, but they should not be treated as interchangeable calculations.
For example, from January 15, 2000 to September 3, 2026:
- Calendar age: 26 years, 7 months, and 19 days
- Total elapsed days: 9,728 days
Calendar age uses completed calendar years and months, whose lengths vary. A total-day calculation simply counts the number of date boundaries between two dates.
