Asking what is my zodiac sign is one of the most common birthday questions there is. Your zodiac sign comes from the position of the Sun on the day you were born: find your birth date in the table below and you will know your sign in seconds, along with its element and traditional trait keywords.

A word of honesty first: zodiac signs are astrology, a cultural tradition thousands of years old, not science. Treat the traits below as storytelling and entertainment, the way horoscope columns intend them, not as facts about your personality.

The zodiac sign date table

Find the date range containing your birthday. Note that cusp dates can shift by a day from year to year (more on that below), so if your birthday falls on the first or last day of a range, double-check the exact year.

The four elements at a glance

Astrological tradition groups the twelve signs into four elements of three signs each. Each element is said to color how a sign expresses itself:

  • Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): action-oriented and enthusiastic: the tradition’s go-getters.
  • Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practical and grounded: the tradition’s builders and planners.
  • Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): social and intellectual: the tradition’s communicators and idea people.
  • Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): emotional and intuitive: the tradition’s empaths and dreamers.

Cusp dates: born on the border

Were you born on, say, March 20 or 21, June 20 or 21, or September 22 or 23? Then you are on a cusp, and your sign depends on the exact year, and even the exact hour, you were born. The Sun does not cross from one sign to the next at midnight on a fixed calendar date; the moment shifts by up to a day from year to year as the calendar and the solar year drift against each other.

What to do: if your birthday is within a day or two of a boundary in the table, look up the Sun’s sign for your specific birth year (an ephemeris or any reputable astrology calculator will give the exact changeover moment). Do not just pick the sign you like better, though plenty of people do, and the tradition has a playful name for it: being “born on the cusp” of two signs.

Worked example: born June 15

Take someone born on June 15, any year.

  • Step 1: scan the table: June 15 falls between May 21 and June 20.
  • Step 2: read the row: that range is Gemini, an Air sign.
  • Step 3: check the cusp: June 15 sits comfortably mid-range, five days from the Cancer boundary, so no year-to-year shift applies. Answer: Gemini, traditionally curious, witty, and adaptable.

How to find your zodiac sign in three steps

  • Confirm your exact birth date. If you only remember the month and year, type your date of birth into our free age calculator to pin down the details, or use the date of birth calculator to see your exact age plus the weekday you were born on.
  • Match it to the table above. Find the date range containing your birthday and read off your sign, element, and traditional traits.
  • Check the cusp. Birthday within a day or two of a boundary? Verify the exact changeover for your birth year. Curious what weekday that birthday fell on? Our guide what day of the week is my birthday covers 2026–2030 and the math behind the shift.

Frequently asked questions

I was born on a cusp. Which sign am I really?

It depends on the exact moment the Sun changed signs in your birth year, which shifts by up to a day from year to year. Someone born on March 20 could be Pisces in one year and Aries in another. Look up an ephemeris for your birth year rather than trusting a fixed table, and ignore anyone who tells you cusp babies get a blended “super sign,” which is a modern invention, not classical astrology.

Why do zodiac dates shift from year to year?

Because the calendar year (365 or 366 days) and the solar year (about 365.2422 days) never quite line up. The Sun crosses each 30-degree slice of the sky at a slightly different clock time each year, so the changeover moment drifts. Leap years re-sync the calendar, which is why a boundary that fell on March 20 one year can land on March 21 the next.

What is the difference between tropical and sidereal zodiac?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons: Aries always begins at the March equinox. Indian (Vedic) astrology mostly uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the actual constellations. Because of a slow wobble in Earth’s axis called precession, the two systems have drifted about 24 degrees apart over two millennia, so your “sign” can differ between Western and Vedic charts. Neither system is scientific; they are simply different traditions.

Is there any science behind zodiac signs?

No. Controlled studies have repeatedly found no link between birth month and personality traits beyond small seasonal effects (for example, school cutoff dates affecting sports). The feeling that a horoscope “nails” you is well explained by the Barnum effect: vague, flattering statements feel personal to almost everyone. Enjoy the zodiac as culture and fun, not as psychology.

Can two people with the same sign have totally different personalities?

Obviously, and astrologers would agree. A full natal chart includes the Moon sign, rising sign, and planetary positions, so the Sun sign alone is only one-twelfth of the traditional picture. Skeptics would add that this is exactly why Sun-sign descriptions stay vague enough to fit anyone. Either way, sharing a sign with someone predicts nothing about how well you will get along.
