What Your Age Difference Result Means
The result describes the fixed calendar interval between the two dates of birth. It gives both a human-readable calendar difference and the total number of elapsed days.
Years, Months and Days
The main result shows the age difference as complete calendar years, complete calendar months and remaining days. This is usually the easiest way to describe how far apart two people are in age.
For example, an age gap might be shown as 4 years, 8 months and 12 days. Using complete dates of birth gives a more precise result than simply subtracting one birth year from another.
Who Is Older?
The person with the earlier date of birth is the older person. The calculator determines this automatically, so it does not matter which date you enter first.
If both dates of birth are identical, neither person is older based on the information entered, and the age difference is zero.
Total Days Apart
The calculator also shows the total number of elapsed days between the two birth dates. This is a different way of expressing the same interval.
The years-months-days result follows calendar units, while the total-day result counts elapsed calendar days. Because months have different lengths and leap years can contain 366 days, you should not try to convert between the two using fixed 30-day months or 365-day years.
How Age Difference Is Calculated
The calculator first determines which date of birth is earlier and which is later. It then calculates the complete calendar interval between those two dates.
For the years-months-days result, the calculation counts complete calendar months from the earlier birth date. If the corresponding day does not exist in a shorter target month, the calculation uses that month’s last valid calendar day. The remaining interval is then counted in days.
This approach accounts for real month lengths and leap years rather than treating every month or year as having the same number of days.
The separate total-days figure is calculated from the elapsed number of calendar days between the two dates.

Age Difference Examples
These examples show why complete dates of birth provide more useful information than comparing birth years alone.

The second example also shows why a calendar year is not always 365 days. The interval includes February 29, 2000, so the two dates are exactly one calendar year apart but 366 elapsed days apart.
Age Difference vs Current Age
Current age and age difference answer different questions.
Current age compares one date of birth with a reference date, usually today. Because the reference date moves forward, a person’s current age changes over time.
Age difference compares two fixed dates of birth with each other. Once both birth dates are known, that DOB-to-DOB interval remains fixed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an age gap the same as an age difference?
Yes. In the context of this calculator, age gap and age difference both mean the interval between two people’s dates of birth.
Why can’t I just subtract the two birth years?
Birth-year subtraction ignores the month and day. For example, someone born on December 31, 1990 and someone born on January 1, 1995 are not five full years apart even though their birth years differ by five. Complete dates of birth are needed for the exact calendar gap.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation uses actual calendar dates and real month lengths, including February 29 in leap years. This also affects the total number of days between the two birth dates.
What happens if both people have the same date of birth?
The result will be 0 years, 0 months and 0 days, with a total difference of zero days.
Does the calculator include the time of birth?
No. This calculator works at calendar-date resolution. If two people were born on the same date but at different times, their DOB-based result is still zero days apart.
Why can one calendar year equal either 365 or 366 days?
A normal calendar year has 365 days, while a leap year includes an additional day on February 29. This is why the total-day value for a one-year interval can differ depending on which dates the interval crosses.
Does it matter which person’s date of birth I enter first?
No. The calculator compares both dates, identifies the earlier birth date and reports the age difference as a positive interval.
